Touring our Classrooms: The Virtual Tour

Even though we can't meet in person, you can share your classrooms through a virtual tour.
During the next two weeks, you should be working on a virtual classroom tour. This assignment has two goals. First, all of us will get a sense of the wide variety of schools and classrooms represented in our Virtual Institute. Secondly, I would like each of you to play around a bit with using technology as a means of publishing writing and sharing your classroom. Your tour should include several photos with captions or narration.

After you have taken pictures and written about your classroom, pick a specific place to share your work. You can create a blog like mine through Blogger; you can create a website like the one on which I have put the assignments; or you can create a PowerPoint and share it with us on Google Docs at docs.google.com . The Google options are free and relatively user-friendly. Microsoft has an option I haven't tried yet that someone might like to try and teach the rest of us: "Microsoft Document Connection."
Each venue has a brief tutorial about how to use it most effectively.

If you already have a website or Blog, you can place your tour there and share the link with us by responding to this post. If all this technology drives you crazy, please just send me a PowerPoint, and I can share it with others. The most important part of the assignment. after all, is sharing your classroom with the rest of our class. Don't be intimidated by the technology; just play around with it a bit.

  1. I have posted a short tour of my classroom here http://e00365.blogs.kpbsd.k12.ak.us/wpmu/ on my blog. I look forward to seeing others from around the state.

  2. Please let me know if y'all can view the clip or not. It worked like a charm at microsoft school but of course here at our Apple-centric home it wouldn't play.

  3. I had to update my Anchorage School District page, and was only able to upload one photo.

Go there for my video. I hope it works....I had some trouble getting it uploaded.

Oh, and make sure to open it in Firefox. That seems to be working best.

  6. Meghan, I can get to your page but there is just a white space where the video is supposed to be. I did use Firefox. Wonder if anyone else is able to open it?

  7. Carla, your video was great! I am much too chicken to do a video, I hate to see myself on screen :(

  8. I loved the PowerPoint from BC and Meghan's video. Thanks so much.
    I couldn't open Carla's (I'm on a Mac; I'll have to try on a PC).
I am finished with my PowerPoint but still need photos. Great, now I'll have to clean my classroom tomorrow... :)

  9. Meghan, your video made my blog seem so outdated. I may need to play with the video programs on my computer to create something new. I was so impressed by all of the wonderful pictures you have with your students! Nice work.

  10. BC...that is what it does for me too actually. If you have youtube blocked on the computer you are on, it won't work.

    Bri...I used iMovie!

  11. I finished my Power Point. A few of the slides looked OK in my preview and then some words were cut off... but you will get the gist.
I hope this gets you there. Let me know if this doesn't work!

  15. Well, you can all tell I had some issues uploading this...please tell me if the link doesn't work!

I decided to try my hand at google docs because I am having my students create presentations using it right now. ASD has created its own google docs portal that my students can access with the log-ins they use to get onto the school computers. Very cool. They don't need to actually register/have an email account, or anything. I've got them in groups doing research on Iran for an upcoming book...more about that in the virtual journal, I think. Here's the link to my presentation. Hopefully you can all open it by copying and pasting the link into your address bar...once there click on view to see the slides as a powerpoint style presentation.

  16. Wow I have a lot to live up to with all of your wonderful videos and PowerPoints. I will post my tour soon. I have been trying to figure out how I want to go about presenting my classroom.

  17. Rick – I read your bulleted list first and was surprised by the following photographs. Although the space was not designed for a classroom, it looks like a busy place where a lot of learning takes place.

Carla – love the orange wall and purple lamp! A bit envious of the water, frig, microwave and coffee pot!

BC – Kindergarten classrooms always make me smile – the energy, colors, centers . . . I’m a bit envious of the carpet.

  22. Hi, all. My classroom tour can be found at http://mskeil.blogspot.com/2011/03/my-virtual-classroom.html
I had trouble uploading video, so it is much like a slideshow. I'm really enjoying everyone's tours, and would love any advice on the best way to upload a vid.

  26. Have I actually posted this? I've been trying to make this available, but kept having to downsize this PhotoStory document. I've wittled it down to just photos and a little text. The narration I had to abandon as the file was just too large.

  27. I went a different route and used comic life. Now I just need to figure out how to share it!

  28. Suzie, I was able to view your file! Since I also used google docs, I hope mine is viewable as well.

Carla, I enjoyed the walk through of your classroom. I especially liked the classroom handshake! :~)

Shirlie, great job using writing in all subject areas! You rock (verb, not noun)!

Joyce, a lovely setting for your classroom. My husband, while working for Sunland Development, did a lot of work in Nanwalek, including on the school and teacherage.

Jenny, fab fotos of your classroom and students!

Nicole, loved your photo layout! The smiles of your students speak volumes of your classroom setting.

Suzanne, great Kardiak (Kodak) moments! Enjoyed the text narration with the photos. Your blog itself is well done, too. Bravo!

Amy, I opened your classroom tour just fine and was delighted by your images. I took a group of HS students to Juneau for the Youth Court conference in February--my first trip to the capital, and I'd love to return in the summer. You teach in a very special place!

Stacey, lots in your photos in which I can relate! I might pilfer the quote. I've considered getting a couch for our classroom, but your comments make me think twice.

Brielle, I liked your wise words and frequently misspelled word bulletin boards. I also enjoyed reading about your classroom.

  29. Meghan,
I thoroughly enjoyed your classroom tour! Ash seems to be a welcome asset to your school. Your images, music, and overall layout would entice others to your school---and to experience life in the Bush. Kudos to you and your students!
